Situated deep inside the forests of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, the Mangala Devi temple is a thousand year old ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Mangala Devi, also known as Kannaki. It is one of the notable Hindu temples in Kerala that attracts visitors not only for its religious significance but also for its breathtaking surroundings and rich history.

The history of Mangala Devi Temple in Periyar is deeply intertwined with the legend of Kannaki, a symbol of moral power in Hindu mythology. According to the Tamil epic Silappathikaram, Kannaki’s husband, Kovalan, was unjustly executed by the king of Madurai. In her fury, Kannaki burned the city of Madurai and ascended to the hills, leaving her earthly life behind. To honour her transformation into a divine being, the ancient king Chera Chenguttuvan built this temple. The architecture of the temple reflects the style of the Pandya kings, and it is said that an underground passage once connected the temple to Madurai.

Nestled at an altitude of 1337 meters above sea level, Mangala Devi Temple offers panoramic views of the Western Ghats and the surrounding landscapes. The temple, located on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, is approximately 7 km from Pazhiyankudi in Theni district and 15 km from Thekkady in Idukki district. The journey to the temple is an adventure in itself, as it involves a 12 Km stretch through dense forests and high-altitude grasslands, accessible only by jeep. This route offers visitors a chance to experience the exotic flora and fauna of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Unlike most temples in Kerala, Mangala Devi Temple opens its doors only once a year, during the Chithra Pournami Festival (usually falling in April/May). On this auspicious full moon day, priests from Tamil Nadu and Kerala conduct ritualistic prayers, and the main deity, Goddess Mangala, is adorned with flowers and silk. The festival is a vibrant event, with women offering Pongala, a sweet dish made of rice, and having their thali (necklace) and glass bangles blessed. Visitors need to obtain prior permission from the Wildlife Warden at Thekkady or be accompanied by district officials of Theni and Idukki during the festival.
