Situated deep inside the forests of the Periyar Tiger reserve, the Mangala Devi temple is a thousand year old ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Mangala Devi. The Mangala Devi temple was built as a testimony to Kannagi who transformed as a divine entity after betraying her anger and showered blessing to the people on Earth. As the legend goes, Kannagi’s husband Kovalan was accused of thieving and was put to death by the king of Madurai. Angered, Kannagi burned all of Madurai and reached the hills from where she left her earthly life with Kovalan in the Pushpaka Vimana. The ancient king, Chera Chenguttuvan built this temple to honor the legendary Kannagi. The temple is famed for its architecture of the Pandya kings. You can also find an ancient passage underground which some say leads to Madurai. The journey to the temple is sure to mesmerize you with its beauty.
