Better known for Nilgiri Tahr - an endangered species of wild goat, Eravikulam National Park in Munnar is Kerala’s first national park. Eravikulam National Park, also known as Rajamalai National Park was established in 1978.
Encompassing 97 square kilometres of pristine Shola forests, rolling grasslands, and perennial streams, the park boasts a diverse ecosystem teeming with wildlife. Munnar's biodiversity hotspot status is solidified by the rich flora and fauna found here, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts.
The star attraction of Eravikulam National Park undoubtedly is the Nilgiri Tahr. This park is a crucial habitat for this endangered species, and its conservation efforts have resulted in the largest surviving Nilgiri Tahr population. Visitors can marvel at these majestic creatures while exploring the designated tourism zone, Rajamalai.
Beyond the Nilgiri Tahr, Eravikulam National Park boasts a vibrant array of wildlife. Sambar deer, Nilgiri Langur, Indian porcupine, and even elusive tigers and leopards call this park home. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 132 species of birds gracing its skies. The fluttering of 101 butterfly species adds to the park's vibrant ecosystem, highlighting its status as a biodiversity hotspot in Kerala.
The landscape of Eravikulam National Park is a spectacle in itself. Rolling green grasslands interspersed with dense Shola forests paint a picturesque canvas. Perennial streams cascade down the hills, while the lofty peaks, including South India's tallest, Anamudi Peak at 2695 meters, stand sentinel over this natural sanctuary.
A visit to Eravikulam promises more than just wildlife encounters. The park's Rajamala tourism zone invites visitors to explore its wonders, offering a glimpse into the unique ecosystem supporting the Nilgiri Tahr. Closed during the calving season from February to March, Rajamala ensures the continued protection of these endangered goats.
Every twelve years, Eravikulam National Park bursts into a sea of purple-blue with the blooming of Neelakurinji flowers. This natural phenomenon attracts tourists globally, offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness this floral spectacle amidst the park's verdant hills.
For adventure enthusiasts, the park presents Anamudi Peak, where trekking trails offer panoramic views of the Western Ghats. While summit access is restricted, the vistas from Rajamala provide ample rewards for nature lovers and enthusiastic photographers.
