Marked as one of Asia's largest freshwater lakes, the Vembanad Lake is a fast-developing backwater tourism destination that sprawl over an area of 200 square kilometers and is said to be the largest lake in Kerala. A narrow barrier island separates the Vembanad Lake from the Arabian Sea. The popular tourist destination, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary lies on the east side of the Vembanad Lake. This lake houses a number of animals, birds and plant species. Boating and fishing are the major activities here. The Vembanad Lake is blessed with an enchanting island called Pathiramanal Island which attracts a lot of tourists.
