Established in 1984, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary sprawls over 55 sq. km of lush forest cover on the slopes of the majestic Western Ghats. Situated in Thalassery, in the southeast part of the Kannur district of Kerala, it stands as the northernmost wildlife sanctuary in the state, sharing borders with the forests of Coorg (Kodagu) district in Karnataka. This protected area boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers.
One of the sanctuary's most notable features is its extensive teak and eucalyptus plantations, covering approximately 490 hectares of forested land. These plantations not only add to the sanctuary's ecological diversity but also provide habitat and sustenance for a wide array of wildlife species.
Despite being one of the smallest wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala, Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary boasts a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna. Home to a rich variety of wildlife, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is inhabited by elephants, leopards, jungle cats, boars, deer, bison, langurs, and various species of squirrels. Its diverse ecosystem also supports an impressive avian population, with over 188 species of birds, including the Malabar Grey Hornbill, Great Pied Hornbill, Broad Billed Roller, and Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, among others.
The sanctuary's natural bounty extends beyond its wildlife to encompass its rich botanical diversity. The evergreen and semi-evergreen forests within the sanctuary are home to a multitude of tree species, including Calophyllum Elatum, Magnifera Indica, Vellapine (Vateria Indica), and Lagerstroemia lanceolata, among others. These forests provide vital habitat for the sanctuary's wildlife and contribute to its overall ecological health.
Trekking through the sanctuary's numerous hill ranges offers visitors a thrilling and immersive experience amidst breathtaking natural beauty. While the trek may demand high stamina due to the challenging terrain and elevation, it rewards trekkers with sightings of diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. Throughout the trekking trails, visitors can marvel at the sight of vibrant butterflies flitting freely amidst the verdant surroundings.
In addition to its natural splendour, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary offers visitors the opportunity for overnight camping at the forest watchtower, providing a unique and immersive experience in the heart of the sanctuary. The sanctuary's proximity to Katti Betta, the highest peak in the area, and the Central State Farm, a key centre for hybrid coconut seed production, further enhance its appeal as a destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
With its unparalleled biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and an array of outdoor activities, the Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary serves as a cherished destination for eco-tourism and conservation efforts.
