Varkala - Anjengo(Anchengo) Fort & Light House

Varkala - Anjengo(Anchengo) Fort & Light House

Anjengo which is now known as Anjuthengu is a coastal town which is sandwiched between Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, near Varkala. It was an erstwhile Portuguese settlement. One of the prime attractions here is the Anjengo Fort which is believed to have been built between the 17th to 18th centuries by the East India Company. This ancient Fort is constructed as a testimonial to many historic events that are related to the colonial rule in the region. The Fort offers a panoramic view of the sandy beach lined with coconut grooves accompanying blue waters of the sea and the backwaters. The 130 feet tall lighthouse is another important landmark of Anjengo which served as the guide for the ships arriving from Britain. It is still preserved as a monument of the colonial past.
