Santa Cruz Basilica was constructed in the year 1505 by the first Portuguese Viceroy 'Francesco de Almeida' and it is one of the eight Basilicas in India. This heritage site is one of the oldest churches in India. The interior of this Basilica which is done in the Indi-Gothic style of architecture is really marvelous. The awe-inspiring altar was painted by renowned Italian painter Fr Antonio Moscheni and his disciple De Gama of Mangalore. The paintings showing the scenes from the Via Crucis of Christ adorns the ceiling of the church. The antiquity, artistic dignity, spectacular beauty and historical importance make this Basilica a must visit destination in Fort Kochi.
