St. Andrew's Basilica - the biggest shrine of St. Sebastian in the world, was constructed by missionaries from Portuguese in the 16th century and is one of the famous pilgrimage centres in Alleppey. It is one of the oldest churches in Kerala and is situated on the shores of Arabian Sea. The feast of St. Sebastian, known as "Arthunkal Perunnal" is the main celebration of this church that has brought fame to Arthunkal. A special ritual is carried out on the final day of the festival where the devotees crawl on their knees all the way from the nearby beach to the church. The church is believed to have some magical powers to heal physical handicaps and mental disorders.
